Tees Valley Careers is the region’s Careers Hub. They have a dedicated careers team who support schools and colleges to implement high quality careers guidance, helping young people make informed decisions around future careers choices.
Earlier this year we met virtually with Tees Valley Careers. Our Managing Director (Lee Elgie), Sales Director (Ian Miller), and Marketing Manager (Emma Hughes) discussed Erimus, the insurance industry, and offered advice to those wanting to pursue a career in the industry.
Ian explained that Erimus are an Insurance Broker specialising in commercial and corporate, providing advice, guidance, and support to local businesses in the region about their insurance requirements.
The insurance industry provides great career opportunities for young people. Whether you are outgoing and love meeting new people, or are more reserved and enjoy problem solving, there is a path for you.
Through the Chartered Insurance Institute you can gain industry recognised qualifications whilst working and earning money. The CII framework allows you to study at your own pace, creating a learning pathway that is unique to your own career aspirations.
“I love my job, every day I get to meet new people and learn about other industries and sectors. I knew that university wasn’t for me, but I gained my ACII qualification which is a Higher Education equivalent” Ian Miller, Sales Director.
Erimus is a supportive workplace that looks to nurture staff and encourages development from within. As an independent business you have direct access to the owners and managers of the business. Our Marketing Manager, Emma, joined the business 5 years ago on a Graduate Scheme:

Erimus are also a Top 75 Independent Insurance Broker in the UK. Although we are based in Teesside, we have a good reputation nationally. With ambitious growth targets, over the coming years there will be an opportunity for young people to come on board.

Our Managing Director, Lee, believes a good CV is key. He suggests if possible, get a part-time job and stick with your studies. But if studying isn’t for you, try to get a job with the ability to progress. He also believes that attitude is important and will recruit someone purely if he thinks they have the right attitude.
Ian further discusses the importance of getting your GCSE’s, A-levels, or whatever qualification you are working towards as Erimus use those to assess the potential of candidates. He also strongly recommends researching the company and industry, to show you have a base knowledge.
Emma’s advice is to do something you really enjoy:
“Don’t study something or go into an industry because you feel it is what you should be doing, if you are willing to work hard and enjoy what you’re doing you are bound to excel”.
