With the arrival today of adverse weather, business owners and road users alike should take additional precautions to safeguard their property.
Winter weather precautions
Heavy snow, rain, sub-zero temperatures and gale force winds can cause structural and contents damage, as well as possible business interruption over winter.
Keep roofs, gutters, downspouts and drains clear of ice, moss and leaves so water can freely drain away.
Consider leaving heating on in sub-zero temperatures so the water in the pipes remains at a constant temperature.
Lag any exposed pipes that are liable to freeze.
Safe winter driving
Before heading out in poor conditions, check traffic and weather reports, allow plenty of extra time and tell someone where you’re heading, taking a phone, food and water.
Remove all ice and snow from your windscreen and de-mist but don’t clear windows with boiling water – it will weaken, and eventually crack, your glass.
Dislodge frozen wipers with warm (not hot) water or de-icer to avoid the wiper fuse blowing.
When driving in ice and snow leave plenty of space between you and the car in front – stopping in snow and ice can take up to 10 times the normal stopping distance.
If driving in fog switch on headlights and fog lamps. Do not ‘hang on’ to the rear lights of the car in front, and switch off music and open a window to listen out for other traffic, especially at crossroads and junctions.
If the forecast or conditions are severe, only drive if the journey is absolutely
